Our Story

A neighborhood doorway
to better bread

The Portal Cafe opened on East 12th Street with a simple conviction: that the best bread is baked slowly, from scratch, and shared without pretense. Our ovens fire up before dawn so the first customers walking in get loaves still warm from the peel.

What started as a sourdough counter became a full kitchen, then a pantry shelf stocked with local honey, olive oil, and small-batch preserves. The door stays open. The coffee never stops. If you live nearby, you're already part of this.

Take the taste
home with you

Our grocery shelves carry what we'd actually eat at home: small-batch olive oils from California, honey from Pacific Northwest apiaries, artisan cheeses, and our own sourdough bread for the road.

Everything on the shelf has passed our own table first. If we wouldn't serve it to a regular, we don't stock it.
